College Scouts Look At Quaid Sterling For Scholorship

ATTENTION COLLEGE SCOUTS: This is a story about HEART. There is an unknown senior at McQueen High School in Reno, NV that definitely deserves a hard look. This kid has played football for 10 years. Each year, he’s played both sides of the ball. This young man plays with great skill, great knowledge of the game, and with great prowess against the enemy. Most of all, this kid plays with heart…the kind of heart that wins…the kind of heart that wins championships on the right team.

Meet Quaid Sterling, #77 for McQueen High School. Any Division I school would be lucky to have him, but we know he’s “probably not big enough”. At 6’1” and 205lbs., this young man pours out his talent and heart every game he plays. Defense is his love. Currently he plays defensive linebacker for McQueen High School. In years past, he’s proved agile and worthy at the position of defensive end as well. Due to “need”, according to his current coach, he’s also needed on offense. Gee, for ten years, every coach has told me the same thing…he’s needed. He’s our Trojan horse, and we must work our horses. It’s the way it is. And so he plays…on and on…play after play…some games, he never sees the sideline except for the few kick-offs and punts. I’ve actually attended many games where I could only see him on the sideline for about 5 total plays. That’s a LOT for any guy. Getting pounded play after play by guys bigger than him, and still coming out ahead of the game is amazing. I’d love for him to get the chance he deserves to play college ball. However, with such diligence on both sides, I fear college scouts don’t get the opportunity to see him as good as he really is.

He’s played defensive end, defensive tackle, tight end, offensive guard, and center in his career on the gridiron. In each position, the coaches “couldn’t do without him”. But yet…colleges are calling others on his team…usually kids that play their own position only, and get the opportunity to show their stuff in excess while rested throughout the game.

I’ve followed this kid from day one in his game. He was so cute at 7 years of age in a Pop Warner uniform. I could actually hear him growl (still to this day) each time he got a quarterback sack. He excelled in the SYFL league here in Reno. Some years, the team hardly won a game, and some years he hailed a champion in first place. No matter, he gave his all each game.

Quaid is SO LUCKY to have played out his Prep career for Coach Ken Dalton,

the most winning coach in the state of Nevada. The discipline of this team is amazing to watch, and hell to live through sometimes. I refer to the McQueen Lancers as the silent militia…to watch this team walk onto a field in silence and in single file determined to overcome the enemy is hair raising and emotional...especially when most teams come onto the field in groups, talking among themselves, being cocky, etc. The Lancers walk with pride, and win or lose...these warriors walk proud. So far this year...we are 5-1...hoping for a playoff bid, and many wins. This team has won more state championships than any in Nevada, the last...2002.

I come from Texas…yes West Texas. And, I lived in the general area of Midland-Odessa. Friday Night Lights was life for me. My personal high school wasn’t as good as the Mojo, but they played by the same rules. It amazes me to this day that years later…and all the way to the West Coast of this USA…Friday Night Lights IS THE WAY MCQUEEN HIGH SCHOOL PLAYS. McQueen carries forth an incredible “Tradition Of Winning”. And, win they do. Chris Carr, now playing for the Oakland Raiders is a recent graduate of McQueen. He came back to the school to see the kids last year and it was a highlight for the players. He gave away about 15 pair of size 10-1/2 shoes to all the kids. My son was SO DISSAPOINTED that he’s a size 12 and didn’t get a pair of the Carr shoes.
