M&M's Fish & Chicken Shack

Today, I experienced a little slice of heaven in an otherwise regular and mundane day. I had lunch from M&M's Fish & Chicken Shack. Where have I been???

I'm not sure where the owner Mr. Mitch Moore is from...but I'd swear he stepped off my Grandmama's back porch in Texas. M&M's is a discreet little hideaway nuzzled in the heart of Reno's industrial district. Who'd know one of the cities' most fantastic culinary wonders is hidden away as a sleeper joint located at 3080 Mill Street, just off Terminal Way. Living so far away from my native roots, it's very rare that I find home style food that I would consider anywhere CLOSE to Texas home style...even when the food is good. And, finding fried okra at any restaurant, much less GOOD fried okra is a near impossibility!

This is truly DOWN HOME cookin'. They advertise southern cooking and soul food, specializing in fried fish, BBQ ribs, fried okra, gizzards, gumbo, greens, yams, black-eyed peas, red beans and rice, sweet potato pies, peach cobbler and MORE! I had a simple rib basket with potato salad, black-eyed peas, and fried okra. They drilled the fried okra right smack dab on the head for the way it always was back home. The ribs were meaty and tender, with a perfect sauce. My potato salad was just like it is "supposed" to be...I was at home back in the South rocking on the back porch with every bite. If you do not have the time to travel across town to Mill Street for your lunch...call (775)-348-0707 and order lunch and pick it up. It's worth the drive.

I'LL BE BACK FOR SURE!!

Shredded Pork Carnitas

Busy people need easy quality recipes that render great food. Fix it and forget it. This one is too easy and it rocks!

Ingredients:
Boneless Pork Ribs (yes, big package of the cheap kind)
1 Large Can Texas Ranch Style Beans
1 Large Onion

Take a large package of boneless pork ribs. I use kitchen scissors to cut the fat off, and cut the rib meat into two inch chunks. Chop the onion into large chunks. Place the pork, and onion into your crock pot. Pour in the can of Ranch Style Beans. Add a slight coating of seasoned salt and pepper over the top. Stir the mixture just to blend. Cover and turn the crock pot on and go to work. (Low at 10-12 hours, High at 6-8 hours). Remove lid when you get home and take a large fork and pick at the meat until shredded. Stir the mixture up well. Shred lettuce, grate cheese, chop a few tomatoes or what ever toppings you like. This meat is awesome. It works well as burritos, tostadas, in taco shells, or even on buns like sloppy joes. Your imagination is the limit, but it’s quite a Mexican delight. Great left over, or freezes like a dream in ZipLoc bags for a quick microwave meal another day.

Damn Dog Piss Browning Up The Yard!

Wanna’ cure those pesky brown spots in your yard caused by dog pee, or the dreaded sun-spots? I have the cure, bonified and tested. Do any of you have that one friend that is ALWAYS right? No, I mean REALLY ALWAYS RIGHT… well, I have one too, and her name is Mitch. As much as she annoys me sometimes (my best friend is old enough to be my Mom)… when she gives me a piece of advice, or tells me something IS, 99.9% of the time, it truly is. The same goes with this remedy for brown lawn.

All Season Green-Up Tonic Recipe:

1 Can Beer

1 Cup Ammonia

½ Cup Liquid Dish Soap

½ Cup Liquid Lawn Food (like Miracle-Grow or something)

½ Cup Molasses or Corn Syrup

Mix all these together well, and place in some type of spray bottle. Spray this mixture on your brown spots between waterings, and Wah-Lah!! Your lawn will begin to green up again. Now you can fire the expensive landscaper!

RECIPE: Cheesy Broccoli Leak Soup

I'M ALL FOR EASY, DELICIOUS, AND QUICK MEALS FOR MY FAMILY IN MY BUSY DAY!
I want to share one of my favorite recipes...

CHEESY BROCCOLI LEAK SOUP

2 Heads Broccoli

1 Leak (Small diced onion may substitute)

2 Cans Campbell's Cheddar Cheese Soup

1 Can Campbell's Cream Of Chicken Soup

1 Pint Heavy Whipping Cream (milk box size)
1 tsp. Seasoned Salt
Pepper To Taste
1-2 Inches Water
1 Pat Butter

Instructions:

Use large heavy pot (Dutch oven type). Clean and slice leak in sliver type pieces. Use only 1-2 inches of the green leafy part. Clean and chop up broccoli heads into floret size pieces (smaller is fine if you like a finer soup). Use solid parts of broccoli heads in 1" chunks. Put about 2 inches of water in the bottom of pot with pat of butter. Bring to a boil. Add leak slices first, then chunks of broccoli. Sprinkle with seasoned salt and pepper to taste. Cover and steam for ten minutes. While doing that, empty the three cans of soup into a microwaveable bowl. Microwave and stir in 1-2 minute increments. Get REALLY warm, but not too hot to taste. Fold in pint of whipping cream. When mixed together well, add to water / broccoli mixture. Stir all together well, but softly as not to break up the broccoli too badly. Heat to the slightest bubbling and serve. Goes great with grilled cheese sandwiches, or served alone with bread on a cold day. A wonderful filler for the sourdough bread bowls. Serves 6 easily, and more if small bowls or cups are used. Keeps well and is great left over too.
