Reno Landmark Mizpah Hotel Goes Up In Smoke

The Mizpah hotel, which is home to several businesses on the ground level, was basically demolished by flames Tuesday night. This building was one of Reno’s original downtown hotels, built around 1921. The massive four alarm fire was started when Valerie Moore 47 (photo below), had an altercation with a hotel guest and decided to lean a mattress against his door and set it on fire. Ms. Moore had just recently been paroled on a 17 year prison stay for 2nd degree murder. At least six people are dead in this fire, and officials fear more bodies may be found when the hotel is examined where the third floor collapsed during the blaze. More than 30 others were injured, and many had to jump out of windows to escape the fire. I want to extend my special thoughts to the owner of the Blind Onion Pizza parlor that was fairly new to this neighborhood, and was located on the bottom floor of the hotel. My son used to work for this gentleman. He had just opened his second Blind Onion establishment several months ago, when a drunk woman left a local hotel on a bad driving rampage and crashed her car into his business. This woman hit a “substantial pillar” of the structure and caused him a few months of downtime then until authorities were able to deem the structure safe again. Now, just a few months later, the business is destroyed in a senseless arson fire. Valerie Moore is currently in custody on charges of 6 counts of murder, one count of arson, and one count of parole violation.
